Brick Pointing

Brick pointing requires several "tools of the trade" to get the job done, namely trowels, picks, pointers, all are hand tools used in the brick pointing process.

The first step is to scrape away any loose, crumbing mortar. You may need to use a hammer and chisel to remove some of the crumbing old mortar. Tap the chisel gently to loosen any old mortar that's crumbling and can be removed. A small paint brush will come in handy for brushing away the crumbling mortar.

Next, comes the new mortar. The mortar consistency should be a bit grainy, a thicker paste. Using your pointing tool, fill in the joints where the old mortar was, taking care to keep the mortar in the joint and off the outer visual side of the bricks.

Brick pointing is a simple repair that does require a little patience and the tools are generally relatively inexpensive.
