Home Maintenance For Everyone

Most people, I find, tend to think property management and maintenance is just for commercial or industrial properties. For the big developers and building owners --- "The Professionals". It shouldn't be though, especially when you consider that the largest lifetime investment (or second largest after raising children) that a family makes is into their home. As a bit of a side note, the average person spends more time shopping for shoes then looking at a house they'll potentially buy. There are a lot of professional property management concepts and ideas that can be easily applied to the average family home maintenance program.

I don't know about you but I sure don't have time for constant home maintenance and repairs. Having said that, home maintenance and repairs are a "fact of life" to home ownership. I often tell people to forget about low home maintenance and to think No Home Maintenance! Yes, I know, realistically that's about as attainable right now as cold fusion but you need to have a goal! What I mean when I say “No Maintenance” is that it’s a concept or idea to apply to the various aspects of home maintenance, renovations, landscaping and even gardening. For example, perennial flowers typically tend to be lower in maintenance than annuals as you’re not replanting every year. A favourite of mine is running the exhaust fan in the bathroom when taking a shower --- this reduces the development of mold which equals less cleaning and therefore lower maintenance!

So the next time you're changing that light bulb or replacing the rubber seal on a kitchen faucet, keep thinking "No Maintenance". You'll be amazed at just how far that will get you!
